Who Is Really In Control?

There is an enormous pine tree outside my window.  I love to wake up and look at it, and appreciate the nature around me.

This morning, I heard a commotion in that tree and I looked out to see a bird loudly and ferociously urging a squirrel out of the tree.  As the squirrel fled, the bird kept flying at it and squawking aggressively.

Two animals.  Both designed to dwell amongst the limbs of the trees.  But one not welcoming the other.

How often do we do that?

We are all humans, designed to live on this earth.  We are different in many ways, yet still the same in being God’s creation. And we don’t want to share our space.  We want to claim our territory.  We want to have control.  We do this in our homes, in our workplaces, and with complete strangers.

Where does this desire for control and authority over others come from?

God’s word clearly tells us that we are NOT in authority. Matthew 28:18 tells us Who is in authority over us:

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

What a beautiful world this would be if we would all stop fighting for our “territory”! How wonderful it would be if we would share the limbs of our trees with a grateful heart.  And how glorious would it be if we all stopped trying to be in control and just submitted to Jesus?

Sometimes I feel like that bird...scrambling and squawking for my place in life. Sometimes I feel like the squirrel...being chased from where I am comfortable and secure. But every day, no matter how I am feeling, my Jesus is there.  When I step away from “it’s about me” and step into letting Him lead me, life is better, and I am neither chasing nor fleeing.  I am simply enjoying being right where He has me.
